Keene Dog Park expected to open in June

KEENE, NH – Keene’s long awaited Dog Park is set to open in a few of weeks.

Deputy City Manager and Facilities Manager Andy Bohannon told WKBK on Tuesday that the group responsible for the park is shooting for a ribbon cutting ceremony in early June.

“I think people are going to be very pleased,” Bohannon said on WKBK’s Open Mic program on Tuesday.

It’s not open quite yet but the fencing is up for the dog park, located in Wheelock Park, and Bohannon said they just need to put up some signage, order some benches, and do some other light maintenance before it is ready for use.

“They can go out and buy some of the signage, the benches, and some of the amenities they were looking to do,” Bohannon said. “So, everything should be ordered by the middle of this week, and we should be good to go.”

Bohannon said there are sections for both small and large dogs and each have their own water spickets and gates. Dogs will need to remain leashed when they are not in the dog park, and Bohannon specifically said dogs need to stay off of the ball fields at Wheelock Park.

There will be a set of rules that Bohannon said will be released ahead of the parks opening. Some of those rules include that there can be no more than two dogs per handler, and children must be supervised by an adult.

Users of the park will also be responsible for cleaning up after their dogs. There will be bags and waste disposal units in the park, but users are encouraged to bring their own waste bags.

The Dog Park project coincides with the Disc Golf project, also in Wheelock Park, which needs a few final touches before it’s done. Bohannon said that should be officially finished and open in early June as well.
