Route 10 to reopen, more rain on the way

KEENE, NH – A section of Route 10 through Winchester that has been closed since the beginning of the week will reopen Friday afternoon.

Winchester was among the hardest hit communities by the storms that wreaked havoc across the region and Vermont on Sunday and Monday this week.

A section of Route 10 from Coombs Bridge Road to Forest Lake Road sustained heavy washout damage and state and town officials were forced to close that section of the roadway around 4:30 Sunday afternoon.

State officials began assessing the damage earlier this week and Governor Chris Sununu visited the area to see it firsthand. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation announced Friday afternoon that Route 10 would reopen by 5 pm.

Now, folks around the region are holding their breath, crossing their fingers, and keeping an eye to the sky this weekend with more rain on the way. WKBK Staff Meteorologist Pat Pagano says showers and storms are expected throughout the day today and Saturday night, then become more widespread on Sunday.

A flood watch remains in effect until 11:00 Friday night. New Hampshire Security and Emergency Management says the greatest potential for heavy rain tonight is across southwestern NH and into the Lakes Region.

With many areas already vulnerable or still being put back together following the storms at the beginning of the week authorities are reminding folks to be vigilant for flooding and reminding drivers not to drive through any closed or flooded roadways.

In an update Wednesday Swanzey Town Administrator Michael Branley said that there are several roads that are open only for residents or emergency vehicles, or still completely impassable.
