KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) For the first time in its history, Keene High School’s field hockey team has captured the Division I state title, capping an undefeated season with an 18-0-1 record. The Blackbirds edged out Dover 1-0 in a hard-fought championship match on Saturday at Bedford High School, with Olive Thatcher scoring the game-winning goal in the final quarter. This historic victory also marks Keene’s first field hockey state championship since New Hampshire began awarding titles nearly 50 years ago.
Head Coach Michelle Tiani, who has spent over a decade building the program, was visibly moved as she joined her players in celebration. The team, known for its close-knit bonds and exceptional defense, has set a new milestone for Keene High athletics. Returning home, the Blackbirds were met with a police and fire escort as they paraded through Central Square to the cheers of proud supporters.
Assistant Coach Jodie Ballaro credited the win to years of hard work and a team culture built on mutual support. “Our mantra has been ‘Work Hard, support your teammates,’ and that’s what we’ve focused on—along with mental resilience and routines,” Ballaro shared. “Above all, field hockey is fun, and we have a great time together.”
The Blackbirds’ historic season also brought individual achievements. Junior McKenna Nelson set a single-season scoring record with 17 goals and seven assists, while senior Sofia Miller marked her 100th high school career point during the semifinal game. On defense, senior goalie Lilly Rowell recorded her 12th shutout in the championship game, with sophomore goalie Dayna English providing strong support throughout the season. Avery Allaire and Natalia Gills anchored the defense, limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities in all 18 games.
The championship represents decades of growth for Keene’s field hockey program, which started its varsity team in 1927 under Coach Helen Brown. Since then, the program has expanded to include JV and freshman squads, fostering athleticism and teamwork for generations of Keene High athletes.
Keene Mayor Jay Kahn will formally honor the team Thursday, proclaiming the 2024 season as a historic achievement for Keene High School.
Coach Tiani’s dedication to Keene’s field hockey program extends beyond the high school season. Her Trilogy Field Hockey Club, established in 2010, has nurtured young players, with many of this year’s champions getting their start there. The win is not only a testament to the team’s talent but also to the commitment of their coaches, families, and supporters who have helped shape Keene High’s field hockey legacy.
